I don't care what they say, Lucys Fur Coat's favorite band must be Steppenwolf. Just listen to that guitar sound. That eighth note chug that is just so ...so... Born To Be Wild, so very Pusherman. This disc is a definite time saver. Once you've listened to the first tune you've pretty much listened to the whole record. O.K. there is an acoustic guitar intro on Sensor but then we are back to that guitar boredom. I guess if you're in the mosh pit with your girlfriend sweating through her braless tank top this might be pretty cool but I just can't get with it at home. The rhythm guitar playing overwhelms much of the rest of the band. I think the rest of the boys like it though otherwise they woulda said "Shit , man, turn it the fuck down."
The lyrics on this record fall into the category of fraternity party chat. Treasure hands is an example: "I don't care if you're soul is risin'. I don't care what drugs you're on. I don't care if you're socially dying. Just take a look and move it on." Huh? The melodies are equally derivative and unmemorable although the background vocals on Falling Out are kinda cool. You know I hate to dis some fellow California surfer boys but... If I had to categorize this music I would call it classic-surf-alternative. Which sounds pretty interesting, except it isn't. The real problem here is the songwriting. The songs don't beckon you to listen because there is nothing new or quirky. It's familiar, too familiar.
What I do like is Mr. Wares singing. He has deep, resonant, powerful voice. If he has the stage presence to match it may raise the anty for Lucys Fur Coat. As for the rest of the band, the playing is proficient but unimaginative. The best thing about these guys is, they're free of pretension. I think they would be killer at a keg party, But I can't recommend it for home use.
Hey, I didn't like this band. But thats what's so great about Urban Desires music reviews. You can check out the bands and decide for yourself, maybe you'll sample these tunes and go "No way man. Daves a friggin wuss." Lucy's Fur Coat totally rules. Listen to Insanity and 747. Maybe you'll disagree. Maybe NOT!
